SHORT SYNOPSIS
Richie, an overweight teenager who has recently been expelled from school, returns to his rural hometown after spending time at fat camp. His parents are convinced the program has finally given him some discipline, and they decide to keep the regime going at home.
Richie, however, refuses to cooperate. Food becomes both his greatest temptation and his simplest form of resistance. What begins as a family’s attempt to help him slowly turns into monitoring, confrontation and humiliation.
As the summer unfolds, Richie and his parents become trapped in a cycle of control and defiance. The more they try to change him, the more determined he becomes to resist them — until their conflict reaches a point where nobody can simply go back to the way things were.
THE FILM
YUM is a character-driven family drama with darkly comic elements. The humour comes from discomfort, contradiction and the absurdity of ordinary situations rather than jokes.
Set in a sleepy rural village over one summer, the film observes a family trapped between care and control, pleasure and discipline, love and humiliation.
At its centre is Richie, a young man who wants adulthood, freedom and pleasure without yet understanding the responsibility that comes with them.
TONE & WORLD
The world is naturalistic, quiet and occasionally surreal.
The comedy emerges from cruelty, awkwardness and the tension between everyday normality and increasingly extreme behaviour. The film stays close to its characters and allows situations to become uncomfortable without offering easy moral answers.
